Why Is Drug Testing Important?

Illicit drug use and abuse is especially detrimental in the workplace.

It is estimated that drug abuse in the workplace costs employers $75 to $100 billion dollars annually in lost time, turnover, productivity, accidents, health care and workers compensation costs. Some 70 percent of the estimated 14.8 million Americans who use illegal drugs are employed, and workers who report having three or more jobs in the previous five years are about twice as likely to be current or past year users of illegal drugs as those who have had two or fewer jobs. https://www.ncadd.org/Illicit

Drug use not only can lower the productivity and revenue of a business,

but it can also place employees at risk. In fact, depending on the line of work, the drug abuse of an employee could have fatal consequences. Fortunately, employers these days are able to test for illicit drug use and implement strategies to pursue drug-free workplaces.

Most Employers focus their drug testing efforts on job candidates,

more and more employers are testing current employees as well through random programs. Although 10% of employed Americans between the ages 18 and 49 admit to illicit drug use, with the right resources and programs, this problem can become a thing of the past. If you're looking to implement a drug-free workplace through pre-employment or random testing, contact Affirm Drug Testing Solutions. We offer customized solutions to make drug testing simple.

Oral Fluid (Swab) Drug Testing

Oral fluid testing with the oral swab device offers confidential lab-based drug test results from an easy-to-use oral fluid collection method. By using oral fluid instead of urine, donors can collect and cap their own samples on-site and in the presence of a monitor, reducing the likelihood of a donor challenge later on. The oral swab collector is a minimally-invasive, easy-to-use method that can be used for pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty and post-accident testing.

Bath Salts Urine Drug Test

Bath salts are synthetic (manmade) stimulants that belong to a class of drugs known as synthetic cathinones. Bath salts are primarily abused by people in pursuit of the methamphetamine-like or inexpensive highs.

Redwood Steroid Panel

Urinalysis is the most reliable and common testing method. The amount of time an anabolic steroid or drug remains detectable in one's system is the longest in urine, especially for the metabolites of that compound. Some of the most common anabolic steroids today are anadrol, oxandrin, dianabol, winstrol, deca-durabolin, and equipoise. Steroids can stay in the body for 14 to 28 days and can be detected through heightened levels of testosterone and steroid metabolites in the user's body.

Hair Drug Testing

This test is a forensic toxicology test that identifies what kinds of substances a person has ingested/inhaled in the past 5 to 90 days. A one-inch strand of hair, harvested from the crown of the head, indicates what kinds of substances a person has ingested/inhaled in this 5 to 90 day period. The hair test detection period is far greater than a urine drug test. Hair testing provides a better picture of overall behavior patterns; identifying repeated, chronic, or binge usage over an extended time frame.

A basic 5 panel hair drug test is, as the name implies, one that identifies five of the most commonly used and abused drugs.

Alcohol Testing

An alcohol test can definitively detect if someone is presently intoxicated, whether they have consumed alcohol over the last several hours, days, or over several months. When choosing our alcohol testing options, your choice should be guided by the circumstances prompting you to order the test. For example, if you suspect someone is drinking on the job, a breath alcohol test provides a definitive answer without violating a person's right to consume alcohol when at home. On the other hand, if a person is required to remain sober over a long period of time (because of a court order, a child custody agreement, or another reason), choose the alcohol test that looks back at the period of required abstinence.

Breath Alcohol

Breathalyzers detect a current intoxication level. This is the most appropriate test to use in the workplace if there is suspicion of alcohol use , or as a standard test after any accident. Breath alcohol tests should be given as soon as possible after an accident or upon reasonable suspicion of on-the-job use. In many cases, Affirm can dispatch a technician for on-site drug and alcohol testing in the La Crosse WI and surrounding area (extra fees apply).

Urine Alcohol

Basic urine alcohol tests can check for alcohol consumption in the last 12 hours.

EtG Alcohol

EtG urine alcohol tests go back 70 to 80 hours. In other words, approximately the past 3 days to determine if someone has consumed alcohol.

DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing

Trust and verify. Random testing is performed on an unannounced, unpredictable basis on employees whose identifying information (e.g., social security number or employee number) has been placed in a testing pool from which a scientifically arbitrary selection is made. This selection is computer-generated to ensure that it is indeed random and that each person of the workforce population has an equal chance of being selected for testing, regardless of whether that person was recently tested or not. Because this type of testing has no advance notice, it serves as a deterrent. Random testing helps to identify employees that have a drug problem and can cause your company harm. Random testing helps deter drug use and helps to prevent employees from starting to use drugs, becoming a drug abuser and causing your company harm.

DOT Drug Test

Safety-sensitive employees of companies in trucking, shipping, and aviation are required to take DOT drug tests. The rules specified in CFR 49 Part 40 are highly detailed and spell out exactly how, where, and when DOT drug and alcohol tests must be administered. Notably, DOT (Department of Transportation) requires pre-employment and random drug testing.
Affirm offers DOT tests and processes all specimens at SAMHSA certified laboratories. Medical Review Officers review all DOT drug tests. The DOT uses a 5 panel test that has been expanded to include four synthetic prescription opiates.
➢ Oxycodone
➢ Oxymorphone
➢ Hydrocodone
➢ Hydromorphone

Members of our Random Pool receive discounts on DOT drug tests.

DOT Breath Alcohol

Breath Alcohol tests are required by DOT to be performed on safety-sensitive employees in a variety of circumstances, including random, after an accident that meets certain minimum criteria, and upon reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol use.
